Economic anthropology

Course Description:

Economic anthropology was developed in the 1940s and ‘50s in opposition to the theoretical agenda of neoclassical economics.  We will briefly review that initial debate, and then consider more recent debates over the concept of value and the performativity of economics.  Finally, we will explore innovative studies about money and the financial sector.
