Social Theory: The gift

Term:
Winter
Credits:
2.0
Course Description:

The publication of the famous essay: „The Gift“ by Marcel Mauss provoked an ongoing debate in anthropology, sociology and philosophy about the theoretical foundations of social theory. Does the paradigm of the gift offer a point of departure to overcome the shortcomings in conceptualizing the ‘social’? To devise a social theory based on the gift relationship is the main objective of the “Movement anti-utilitariste dans les sciences sociales” (M.A.U.S.S.).  Starting with a detailed reading of “The Gift” this course critically evaluates the state of the art of theoretical endeavors based on the gift paradigm.
