Public Lecture by Mirjam de Bruijn (Leiden Institute for History, University of Leiden) on Mobile telephony in Africa: a 'communication revolution'?
Since the liberation of the telephony sector in Africa at the end of the 1990’s, the mobile phone has spread rapidly on the continent. The mobile phone revolution was a fact! In the research program Mobile Africa Revisited that started in 2008 we have tried to discover the stories behind this so called 'success'. The developments around and as a consequence of the spread of wireless technology are multiple and go in many directions. This presentation consists of a short introduction to Mobile Telephony in Africa and a film of 30 minutes.
