We are probably unaware that Bourdieu’s Domination masculine (1998) has an earlier version published with the same title as an article in Actes de la recherche en sciences sociales in 1990. We have the exceptional chance, then, to study in vivo the working of the sociological paradigm-alchemy by comparing the two texts. In the book-version the author does not change his essentialist argument about the universality of masculine domination but states that “whatever their position in the social space, women have in common the fact that they are separated from men by a negative symbolic coefficient”; consequently, “the structure of the gaps is maintained”. I will try to argue that in the book Bourdieu extends his thesis concerning the reproduction of social structure to the reproduction of men/women relationship, i.e. he carries out a paradigm-extension.

Biogaphy:

Miklos Hadas is Professor of Sociology at Corvinas University, and is part of their Centre for Gender and Culture there. Dr. Hadas has a doctoral degree from ELTE, a PhD from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and has obtained the highest level degree possible, a Habilitation from Corvinas University. He has been a guest lecturer at various universities, including UC Berkeley, the University of Vienna, Cluj, Leicester, and the prestigious Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He has published extensively in both English and Hungarian. In 2006 he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Republic, one of the highest state honours one can receive.
