The Stuart Hall Project

A documentary film by John Akomfrah,

2013, 95 min., with Engl. Subtitles

Screening followed by a discussion with

John Clarke

The Stuart Hall Project presents an intimate portrait of the Jamaican-born public intellectual and co-founder of The New Left Review, whose work in cultural theory has profoundly influenced the academic and political landscape. Using extensive footage of Hall’s appearance on TV and radio, the film explores themes of memory, race and identity, and the wider social and political events of the second half of the 20th Century. Sound track by Miles Davis, Hall’s favorite musician.

John Clarke is Recurrent Visiting Professor in the Sociology and Social Anthropology Department, CEU. John was Stuart's student, friend, collaborator and colleague for over 40 years, starting at the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in 1972 and later at the Open University.

Event chaired by Alexandra Kowalski, Sociology and Social Anthropology, CEU.
