Re-envisioning Social Movements in the Global City: the Politics of Displacement in New York City: 1975-2014

Public lecture by Ida Susser, Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College and CUNY Graduate Center

This paper reviews the changes in New York City as it was restructured from an industrial port city to a global financial center.  It documents the transformation of working class social movements in the face of welfare restructuring and displacement and then explores the cooperation and conflict between the historical working class population and the influx of artists and professionals displaced from other parts of the city over the same period.  The paper examines the increasing patterns of inequality and asks to what extent new urban coalitions have been able to reshape the direction of the city.
