Early application deadline** for applicants seeking an early decision because they either need no CEU financial aid or wish to apply for external funding.  Those applicants in this category should email the Admissions Office to request an early decision after they have applied.

Application deadline for self-financing applicants for all master’s programs (including MESPOM, Mundus MAPP and the MA in International Relations New York track) who need a visa to enter Austria (except applicants from visa-sensitive countries).

Application deadline for self-financing applicants for master’s programs  (including MESPOM, Mundus MAPP and the MA in International Relations New York track) who need no visa to enter Austria. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Subject to spaces available.  

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

1-year MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology

For general CEU PU entry requirements, see the CEU PU Admissions Policy in Annex 1.2.2. University entry requirements are:

· Applicants must have a first degree from a recognized university or institution of higher education. Admission to the one-year MA program requires at least 4 years of prior university studies.
· Students enrolled in a master's program at CEU PU must not be simultaneously enrolled in another higher education institution
· English proficiency (for minimum test scores, see the CEU PU Admissions Policy in Annex 1.2.2).

- Departmental entry requirements are:

· A 500-word research proposal. The topic should fall within the broad thematic focus of the department and the areas of interest of its faculty.

  • the research proposal (3 pages or less,1.5 spaced, not including bibliography) elaborating on the main research questions and historical context; describing the research, the approach and the methods considered; and placing the topic in the context of previous research in the field (in-text references)
  • a short  bibliography (one page or less) of works cited in the proposal.

· 2 recommendation letters
· A writing sample. The writing sample should be a 1500-2000 words long sample of academic writing. This can be (part of) a course essay, or a chapter of a thesis that you produced while studying for your first degree, and it should be in English. Certainly, it can be a current piece written specifically to meet the requirements of the Department as well.

2-year MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology

For general CEU PU entry requirements, see the CEU PU Admissions Policy in Annex 1.2.2. University entry requirements are:

- Applicants must have a first degree from a recognized university or institution of higher education. Admission to the two-year MA program requires at least 3 years of prior university studies.

- Students enrolled in a master's program at CEU PU must not be simultaneously enrolled in another higher education institution

- English proficiency (for minimum test scores, see the CEU PU Admissions Policy in Annex 1.2.2).

 Departmental entry requirements are:

PhD in in Sociology and Social Anthropology

Applicants must have a master's degree (or equivalent) in a social science discipline from a recognized university or institution of higher education, or provide documentation indicating that they will earn such a degree before enrollment in a CEU doctoral course of study. Background in sociology and/or anthropology is a definite advantage.

English language prerequisites for doctoral applicants are as follows:

In addition to meeting the general CEU PU admissions requirements, students must submit:

- three letters of recommendation  from professors who are familiar with their work;

- a research proposal (3 pages or less,1.5 spaced, not including bibliography) elaborating on the main research questions and historical context; describing the research, the approach and the methods considered; and placing the topic in the context of previous research in the field (in-text references)

- as well as a short  bibliography (one page or less) of works cited in the proposal.

- a writing sample in English. The writing sample should be a 1500-2000 words long sample of academic writing. This can be (part of) a course essay, or a chapter of a thesis that you produced while studying for your first degree, and it should be in English. Certainly, it can be a current piece written specifically to meet the requirements of the Department as well.
- a statement of purpose (maximum 500 words).

The evaluation of PhD applications involves several stages: a review of each application by two members of the department; initial ranking based on combined scores; personal interviews with the highest-ranking applicants (on the phone, Skype, or in-person); final ranking of candidates based on the overall score; collective decision on the merit list based on a meeting involving all faculty members.
