We offer US and Austrian-accredited One- and Two-year MA Programs, as well as doctoral education in Sociology and Social Anthropology
MA Programs in Sociology and Social Anthropology ( 1-year and 2-year )
Our MA programs in Sociology and Social Anthropology enable students to deepen and broaden their knowledge of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of social phenomena, structures and processes. The department offers a wide range of courses on topics ranging from social theory, migration, religion, ethnicity, cultural policies, economic sociology, globalization, dynamics of modernity, institutional change, urban processes and gender relations. Students are encouraged to articulate individual positions in bridging the two disciplines in the topics they study. One of the main endeavors of the program is to develop the research skills of students by offering solid training in methodology.
Our curriculum is offered in two versions. The 1-year MA Program provides a more intensive learning environment. Due to a longer study period, the 2-year MA Program is an excellent choice for those who aim to continue to PhD research and training. Students having either a three-year or four-year bachelor's degree in the social sciences and allied fields may apply for the latter. Students in the two-year program also have the option to specialize in Global and Urban Studies. This track is an innovative and interdisciplinary course of study that focuses on the relationship between global processes and cities, and on the ways in which political, economic, and social structures interact on local, urban and global scales.
PhD PROGRAM
The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology offers a doctoral program of the highest international standard for prospective scholars and teachers. Our program does not have separate Sociology and Anthropology tracks but rather aims to integrate both disciplines. We therefore especially welcome dissertation projects that combine sociological and anthropological perspectives and embrace broad intellectual agendas. We encourage empirical research that uses a wide variety of methodologies, and we expect comparative and theoretically informed approaches. Our program is accredited by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York (US) for and on behalf of the New York State Education Department and on behalf of the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria (AQ Austria). Funding is for four years and the dissertation must be defended within five years of passing the Comprehensive Examination.
FINANCIAL AID
Financial aid is granted on the basis of academic merit. CEU scholarships are available for most of our programs. Please make sure to check your future program's website before you start your application.
To be considered for financial aid, remember to apply by the financial aid application deadline and indicate your interest in the Funding section of the Online Application Form.
Please make a responsible assessment of your financial situation before applying and also look for alternative sources of support, such as foundation grants, employer support, or state scholarships.
Students can receive CEU financial aid for the same academic level only once. For example, a student who has received CEU financial aid of any sort for master’s studies can pursue a second master's degree at CEU on a self-financing basis only.
