Year of Enrollment:
2020

Chris van Kalkeren is a political sociologist working on social movements, solidarity, and allyship. Her research project deals with the phenomenon of 'outsider allies': people who participate in social movements, but who do not belong to the social groups these movements represent. She focuses on movements fighting oppression based on race and sexual identity, and examines the ways in which the participation of outsider allies is understood by different groups within these movements, what this participation means for the collective identity of movements, and what potential conflicts arise through the relationship between movements' beneficiaries and their allies.

Academic interests: political sociology, social movements, identity, LGBTQ politics.
